Magazines?

Now that I’m getting a new home, I’m casting about looking for magazines to subscribe to. I used to subscribe to the Globe and Mail, but I find its coverage rather bland (they “feed the goat:” publishing topical articles to fill space, rather than providing any kind of background or insight). What’s worse, I don’t have time to read a daily newspaper, so I’d like to start subscribing to a few magazines that will provide topical articles that are relevent for more than 24 hours.

So far I’ve decided upon New Scientist, The Walrus, and Photolife. Does anyone have any suggestions for other mags? I’m looking for something either current-affairs-y, or technical; preferably published in Canada; that covers more than headlines news.

Seed, a very good (Canadian!) science magazine, finally back in publication.
The Economist, excellent current affairs analysis weekly. A European technocratic right wing stance, but very consistent.

    Paper based media, how quaint.

But seriously. I do alot of reading in front of my computer and I often find I wish I could get only versions of magazine that I will occasionally pick up. I’d be happy to pay half the cover price for a PDF of a magazine. But I’m not a subscription guy either. I’ll read part of an article in the store and buy it if I want to read the rest of it.

I like the Atlantic Monthly, though it is not Canadian…

If you have any interest in cooking, get Cook’s Illustrated (http://www.cooksillustrated.com/).

I picked up a copy of Seed on Saturday and I was impressed. The last time I’d read it (January, 2005) it was a little too political, and insufficiently sciencey. But the September edition looked pretty good. They’re still soft on the science side of things, and have incessent lists of “great thinkers” and other lifestyle magazine filler; but the annual subscription is rediculously cheap, and the few science stories they have were interesting.

Although I think they’re based in New York now… =)

    Hey ho, dave0,

I’ve been secretly reading Martha Stewart Living whenever I visit my mother. I don’t feel like I’d be able to subscribe to it and keep my ever-vanishing street cred, so Cook’s Illustrated sounds like a pretty good stand in. Since it really is the recipes that I read Living for anyway. Honest.

    Mr. Green,

Each time I pick up the Atlantic Monthly I’m impressed. I was thinking of either that or the Economist.

    Tee hee, Mr. MG,

I like things arriving on my doorstep (unless they’re burning bags full of dog shit), and I’m too lazy to go to stores to buy magazines. So subscription is the way to go. And I’m not a big fan of reading from a screen. In my books, paper is preferable.
