Subsidies

A comment on one of my older posts about OC Transpo got me thinking:

If OC transpo had to run as most businesses, without subsidies.. the fares would have to increase by 227% to cover their costs. Think about that as you move towards the workforce, and remember to say thanks to everybody else you meet who subsidizes your travel.

One of the joys of living in our quasi-socialist society is that everyone subsidizes everyone else. I’ve subsidized countless hospital/doctor trips of my fellow citizens. I’ve paid part of the costs of our military and EI systems. I’ve subsidized the construction and staffing of schools that neither I nor my children will ever set foot in. I’ve subsidized the construction of roads to parts of the country I will never see. I’ve even subsidized the maintenance of sewers and roads out in the ‘burbs, which is a painfully inefficient use of my tax dollar.

I don’t expect anyone to thank me for doing that. It’s part of being a Canadian. When I ride the bus, I’m thankful to the people immediately involved in the process (the bus driver, OC Transpo staffers, and my fellow riders) who make the trip enjoyable.

Similarly, I don’t expect other people on the road to be grateful to me for lessening the wear and tear on the roads by using an efficient vehicle. I don’t expect children and the elderly to be grateful to me for lowering rates of respiratory ailments by producing less pollution than the folks that drive to work. I don’t expect society to be grateful to me for lengthening the life of our oil reserves.

Oh please. The biggest single subsidy in our society is the creation and maintenance of the road infrastructure and all the associated support: i.e. trauma support in hospitals to deal with injuries from car accidents, traffic enforcement, winter plowing & salting. It amounts to thousands of dollars per year, per car. And rising. And that doesn’t even touch ‘externalities’: damage to the environment by salt, exhaust and so on.
That’s treated as an entitlement. But take the bus and you’re a freeloader. I think not.

Just hit submit and realized that your comments reminded me of this old onion article:

    http://www.theonion.com/content/news/report_98_percent_of_u_s_commuters

“Expanding mass transit isn’t just a good idea, it’s a necessity,” Holland said. “My drive to work is unbelievable. I spend more than two hours stuck in 12 lanes of traffic. It’s about time somebody did something to get some of these other cars off the road.”

An interesting note… Yesterday I paid 4 pounds to ride the underground in London one way. And I thought busses in Ottawa were expensive… Today I got a off peak day pass for 5.75 pounds. Weekends seem to be much cheaper…

BTW anyone know pount symbol on my keyboard is?

@MG: I’ve heard the UK has a much higher cost of living than that of Canada. If gas is twice the price it is here, then perhaps 4 quid for a one-way trip on the underground isn’t as crazy as it sounds. Then again, they may have really good deals on passes/multi-trip packs.

And no, I don’t know where the “pount” symbol is on your keyboard. I don’t even know what your keyboard looks like. But you may find http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/codeint.html useful.

The markup after exchange seems to be about 40% on everything except gas seems to be double Ottawa prices, Movies are double Ottawa prices, and the London underground is double Toronto prices… That being said I think you get what you pay for. London Transit is great nothing is more than 20 minutes from an underground station and if you don’t want walk there’s a bus that will take you the rest of the way…

Oxford on the other hand cost me £1.60 for a 10 minute trip… Apparantely you pay by how far you travel… So that was alot cheaper and seemed pretty reasonable… An interesting note is that there are 2 competing bus companies here in Oxford…

I’ll continue my reports on UK public transit when I get to Manchester this weeked.
